Prehistoric dinosaur hub

The Hydrosaurus, often called the Sailfin Dragon, is a striking semi-aquatic lizard found along rivers and in the dense rainforests of the Philippines. It stands out for the large, sail-like crest along its tail and back, especially visible in adult males. This fin helps with balance and movement in water, making these reptiles powerful swimmers that can quickly dive beneath the surface when threatened.

Growing up to about 1.2 meters (4 feet) long, Hydrosaurus is one of the largest members of the agamid lizard family. Juveniles are even capable of sprinting across the surface of the water for short bursts, much like the well-known basilisk lizard. Despite its dramatic, almost prehistoric look and its name “dragon,” Hydrosaurus is not closely related to dinosaurs. It belongs to a completely different group of reptiles that evolved separately long after the age of dinosaurs ended.

Due to ongoing habitat destruction and illegal wildlife trade, these unique lizards are now considered vulnerable in the wild, making conservation efforts increasingly important.
